Reproductive system in turtles

Reproductive system of males

Since most species of the turtle family is living long enough, and sexual system reaches maturity slowly forming over a number of years.Over time, the genitals grow and their size increases significantly. In Mature specimens the testes take the form of an oval or cylinder, have calves they look like a small bulge.

The male turtles are distinguished 4 stages of development of the reproductive system:

  • regenerative;
  • progressive;
  • cumulative;
  • regressing.

The first three phases indicate the development of the testes. In the ejaculatory tube is injected the sperm which moves to the cloaca, and then enters the penis. When the male is excited, swollen penis turtles is outside of the cloaca and become visible from the outside.

Marine and terrestrial species are very large penis. During sexual excitement it grows by 50%. In some species, its size reaches half the length of their body. It is believed that the sexual organ is necessary not only for copulation, but is also used to intimidate. But when ends the period of sexual arousal, the penis of a turtle hiding under the shell.

Note: Sexual organ of a male turtle is outside the body, during the sexual arousal and mating, and then gradually retracts inside. If this happens, the turtles have health problems, may develop certain diseases.

Reproductive system females

Females turtles reproductive system is formed by following departments:

  • botryoidal form on the ovaries;
  • an elongated oviduct;
  • skorumpowani glands located in the upper part of the infundibulum.

The ovaries located near the kidneys and are located in the Central part of the body. Their growth occurs gradually, and the size increase by the time of puberty. For Pets this age of 5-6 years. Females during mating, all sexual organs swell significantly increasing.

Turtles have no uterus, because not developed in-utero gestation of the young. The yolk of the egg is formed by the liver, which synthesizes it using fat tissue. Two in parallel passing of the oviduct are connected in the region of the cloaca. They are:

  • to move eggs;
  • in the formation of shells of future embryos;
  • in the preservation of sperm;
  • directly in the process of fertilization.

Before the cloaca is a vagina of a turtle. Is an elastic muscular tube that can stretch and shrink. Here the sperm can long remain and fertilization is possible with the maturation of the egg due to pre-stored sperm, and not at the time of intercourse.

The fertilized egg gradually moves through the oviduct and from it is formed the egg. The cells of the upper division of the oviduct secrete the protein (creating protein shell), and due to the lower portion of the shell is formed. There are cases when females regardless of the male, not lay fertilized eggs.

There are 4 stages of development of the reproductive system of turtles:

  • the growth of follicles in size;
  • the process of ovulation;
  • directly fertilization;
  • regress.

The increase in follicles is a consequence of ovulation (formation of eggs) followed by the process of fertilization, and then we regress.

Note: once the female lays eggs, she will end the reproductive period and reproductive system comes into a stable state. For reptiles not typical of the care of the offspring, so the mother is not interested in when and how the light will be her offspring.

Reproduction turtles

Turtles bad breed in captivity. For this they need to create conditions close to natural environment. With proper nutrition, a good microclimate and sufficient free movement is possible, the process of pairing a hulking reptiles. They are able to show sexual activity throughout the year.

Often as pet contain water slider turtle. Heterosexual individuals placed in a common cage and watch when the couple will tie the relationship. Usually the male plant for several females in the mating season. The male is unlike the female has a longer tail and the notch on the plastron.

During sexual arousal the behavior of individuals changes significantly. They become more active and militant. For example, males can fight over a female.

Sex organs from the red-eared terrapins are not much different from other types.

When mating, the male climbs on the female and injects into her cesspool of semen. Aquatic turtle mating occurs in the water, land on land. The process of fertilization occurs in the body of the "future mom". During pregnancy it is deposited by the male which becomes aggressive.

Note: From the moment of fertilization to egg laying takes 2 months. But the eggs can remain in the body of the female for a while, if it does not find a comfortable place to snooze. In the natural environment selects for the turtle laying the place where she was born.

Reproductive system of turtles is quite perfect and allows to proliferate under favorable environmental conditions a few times a year. But since the eggs hatched and the babies are not protected by the mother, most of the offspring are killed for different reasons. Therefore in the Red book to date is listed up to a dozen types, and some are preserved in single copies.
